Wild Weather
Explore the weather. Engineer a solution. Become a STEM Steward.
What makes one part of a schoolyard hotter than another—and what can students do about it?
In this hands-on Discovery Experience, students become weather scientists and environmental engineers as they investigate temperature, wind, sunlight, shade, plants, water, and different surfaces. Using real observations and data, teams take on an engineering challenge to design a cooler, healthier, and more resilient school environment.
But discovery doesn't stop with learning. Students become STEM Stewards, using what they've discovered to identify real environmental challenges and explore practical solutions—from trees and native landscaping to shade structures, water-wise designs, habitat improvements, and cooler surfaces. This is a great way to start them on their civic learning journey.
Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), this interactive experience builds curiosity, critical thinking, collaboration, engineering skills, and environmental stewardship while empowering students to use STEM to make a positive difference in their school and community.
