Discovery Experiences
Explore. Discover. Become a STEM Steward
DLI Discovery Experiences bring science to life through immersive, hands-on adventures that get students exploring, questioning, experimenting, and solving real-world challenges. Each experience connects classroom learning to the natural world in exciting and memorable ways.
But discovery is only the beginning.
Every experience encourages students to become STEM Stewards—using what they learn to make a difference. Through a STEM Steward Challenge, students turn knowledge into action by protecting habitat, conserving resources, supporting wildlife, reducing waste, solving an environmental problem, or designing a solution for their own school or community.
Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and designed to support environmental literacy, engineering, critical thinking, collaboration, and student leadership, Discovery Experiences can be adapted for elementary through high school students.
Students don't just learn about the world around them. They discover how they can help shape its future.

Experience the silent flight of a Great Horned Owl; stare into the eyes of a Red Tailed Hawk and wonder at its beauty; learn about the Peregrine Falcon while watching its movement on the glove.
Step into the food web and discover how every living thing is connected! Participants take on the roles of producers, consumers, Earth’s cleaners, and apex predators as they build a giant physical food web and experience what happens when even one link disappears. Interactive encounters with insects, birds, and reptiles bring these important relationships to life—creating an unforgettable, hands-on adventure filled with discovery, movement, and a few wonderfully wild surprises!
Nature has been solving problems for millions of years! Students investigate amazing plant and animal adaptations, discover how nature inspires human inventions, and then design, build, and test their own nature-inspired solutions. Observe nature. Think like an engineer.
Journey of Water
Students simulate the movement of water within the water cycle by experiencing variable paths, direction, and states of matter. A detailed discussion of the water cycle precedes the activity and includes the topic of local water resources, water treatment, and water conservation. Closure involves a writing component that outlines their specific water journey and the processes involved. (Adapted from Project Wet)

Wild Weather Stewards
Students become weather scientists as they investigate temperature, sunlight, shade, surfaces and microclimates, then use their discoveries to engineer a cooler, healthier school environment. From trees and native plants to shade, water-wise designs and cooler surfaces, students discover how STEM can help communities respond to extreme weather.

Energy Detectives
Students become Energy Detectives as they explore light, heat, sound, electricity, and motion through hands-on investigations and challenges. They discover how energy moves, why wasting it matters, and how they can use STEM to find smarter solutions—at school, at home, and in their community.

Leadership & Teambuilding
Character and Leadership traits are accomplished through teacher‐led discussions and hands‐on activities that provide teachable moments to reemphasize the qualities of self‐confidence, utilizing initiative, teaching the importance of teamwork, and building an understanding of leadership. The activities will vary depending on the grade level of the students.

Prepare for the Outdoors
Students will develop practical skills in outdoor adventure by learning how to pack efficiently for a camping trip, set up a campsite, and prepare and cook meals in a camp environment, demonstrating self-sufficiency and an understanding of outdoor safety and leave-no-trace principles.

Service Learning
Students will gain practical experience in planning and executing a civic project focused on environmental improvement by participating in hands-on activities that involves conducting environmental and root cause assessments, developing project ideas, and advocating and implementing initiatives within their school and even their community.
Bring Discovery to Your School
Discovery Experiences come directly to your classroom, campus, STEM Day, after-school program, or community event. Programs can be customized by grade level, group size, and learning goals.
