Leadership Lesson #1

What Every Great Leader Understands About Growth

Every leader can probably point to a moment that changed them.

It wasn't necessarily a classroom lecture or a leadership book.

It was a challenge.

Maybe it was standing in front of a group for the first time. Leading a difficult conversation. Climbing a mountain. Navigating a cave. Speaking up when it would have been easier to stay quiet.

Growth rarely happens inside our comfort zone.

One of the foundational concepts in adventure education is Challenge by Choice, developed and championed by adventure educator Karl Rohnke. The idea is simple but powerful: every participant chooses how far to stretch themselves. Growth should never come from fear or pressure—it comes from willingly accepting challenges that are just beyond what feels comfortable.

This philosophy aligns with what psychologists describe as the Comfort–Stretch–Panic Zone Model.

  • Comfort Zone: Everything feels safe and familiar. While this is an important place to recharge, very little growth occurs here.

  • Stretch Zone: Students experience manageable uncertainty. They take healthy risks, solve problems, build resilience, and discover they are capable of more than they imagined. This is where confidence grows.

  • Panic Zone: When a challenge becomes overwhelming, learning decreases. Instead of growing, students often focus on escaping the situation.

As educators and facilitators, our goal isn't to push students into panic.

Our goal is to create experiences that invite them into the Stretch Zone, where they feel challenged, supported, and empowered.

At Discovery Leadership Institute, every leadership challenge, outdoor adventure, civic engagement project, and experiential lesson is intentionally designed with this philosophy in mind. Students aren't expected to be fearless—they're encouraged to take one courageous step beyond what they thought they could do.

Because confidence isn't created by avoiding challenges.

It's created by overcoming them.

As Karl Rohnke's philosophy reminds us, Challenge by Choice means every student has ownership of their own growth. When students choose to step forward, they begin discovering strengths they never knew they had.

Leadership Lesson #1

Leadership begins where your comfort zone ends.

Reflection: Share a personal story from one of your adventures. When did you step outside your comfort zone, and what did you discover about yourself?

Feel free to download our flyer that outlines emphasizes how to do this.
